The Arts and Crafts industry is making a comeback, most academics argue it’s because parents and teachers are trying to get children off online games and tablets and get them back to the joy of scrapbooking and crafts using Mulberry paper. Mum and Dad cannot share with a child the solitude of a video game as much as they can be educating through sharing the fun of making something out of paper together.
Mulberry paper is harvested In parts of Japan, Korea, and in South East Asia especially around the Myanmar Thai Laos border area more traditionally known for growing opiates.
The Mulberry tree which is actually considered a weed, grows abundantly near streams and the bark is stripped from the tree and processed by melting down and turning into a pulp and then spread over gauze and wood templates and spread out then evened and then it dries rather quickly in the sun which is also abundant in South East Asia.
Colours are added or company logos and depending whether you want embossed on fine Mulberry paper sheets it is created at the processing stage.
The trees are never cut down and grow back again quickly, making the process a sustainable one for the indigenous people.
You may see Mulberry paper in your craft stores and for the end user it is a most versatile paper as it is very durable. Manufacturers don’t just sell the sheets; prestige packaging is made with Mulberry paper, as are Wine bags and other gift packaging bags.
For the crafts people Mulberry has an edge that is deckled or fuzzy when it is ripped due to the fibers and can be ideal for artists who want to add grass scenes or Witches hats, seaweed, spiky hair or anything where the natural edges are fibrous. Some artists use old roll deodorant bottles filled with water to draw along the edges they want to rip to get that shape they want.
Many Scrapbooking embellishments are made from Mulberry paper and the scrapbooks too, oh sure a digital photo is great and we all use Facebook every day, but to have a photo frame on the mantelpiece which are also made from Mulberry paper with you favourite family photo inside for all to see whenever they want is still better than looking at a smartphone or having to switch on a PC.
Some things in life rarely change and quality time with children scrapbooking and making pictures together is one and the eternal memories from a traditional photo frame is another.
